Web Development Skills
To be very clear right up front, there is a type of web site that I am
proficient at and many types that I am not.
-
Compatibility - I am best at, and focusing on, standard [HTML] web
sites that are clean, artistic, and run correctly on the widest variety of
browsers.
-
Artistry - I focus very much on clean pictures.
I also enjoy animations, whether a moving picture motif or animated art, to create a more lively, cinematic experience.
I do not create full Flash based websites, but I do use Flash extensively in making instructional videos that add very useful content to my later websites.
-
Database work - I do much work with PHP\MySQL and have created custom shopping carts and blogs for my customers.
-
Primary Skills
-
HTML Compatability - I program in the most basic HTML\CSS format
using MS Visual Studio Pro 2005, 2010 and 2012. I have become proficient at Cross Browser
compatability and have worked around many of the issues involving different browsers.
-
JavaScript - I do a lot with JavaScript, primarily mouseovers and timed picture changing events.
I like JavaScript for it's compatibility with most to all modern browsers.
That, plus you don't have to download anything to make it work, makes it a great tool.
-
.Net - I am continually progressing in the ASP.NET world, though it is a constantly moving target.
Basic .Net I am quite good at, including databases and web services.
Newer areas like MVC and frameworks like DotNetNuke I am only passingly familiar with.
-
PHP & MySQL - I very much enjoy programming and database work.
This type of programming has been my forte for over 20 years.
-
Photo Editing - Almost all my sites make heavy use of cleaned
up photography. There is almost always a frame or fade around these photos to
create a 3D impression. There is often a lot of cleanup necessary to make
photos less grainy and to make them blend in with the background. Though I am
not an artist, I usually spend the bulk of my time in this area and have
somehow ended up in the more artistic oriented web sites because of this.
-
Animated GIFs - These are the "movielike" changing pictures in a number of my sites.
Though it can take a lot of time to make these work and look good, some motion is almost imperative in a website nowadays to keep it from looking dull and unimpressive.
-
Flash Video - In my agelong interest in stop-frame animation, I have made many very technical Flash animated videos that help explain very difficult topics.
I use this technology extensively in my later website work.
-
Wording and Arrangement - I do enjoy writing and am generally
able to phrase and edit a website to keep it as clear, concise, and as
interesting as possible.
-
Secondary Skills
-
Java - I am familiar with Java and have spent about a year programming
in it. I don't consider myself a Java expert, but can use it if the project requires it. I use
the NetBeans IDE Version 4.0.
